CHAPTER ONE
Frost in Frostgard and the Storm’s Child
In the hour when night hesitates before surrendering the city to a day that never quite becomes day, Leo Folk slipped out of the Nest as he had done since he was a boy: through the broken skylight in the roof, out across the warehouse roof slick with dew, and down the rusted drainpipe into the alley whose name no one but him knew. He was not fleeing anything. He was going to the one place in Frostgard where no one demanded that he be harder than he was.
